Fish Island are through to the next round of the Jack Morgan Cup beating Acorn FC 2-4 in a penalty shoot out.
The Scales took an early lead with Craig firing in from close range after the home team were unable to clear a cross from the right. 1-0! Fish Island almost doubled their lead soon after. Jordan made space inside the box to get a shot off. The shot had beaten the keeper only to be denied by the post. The rebound fell to Craig who hit a well struck shot that was stopped on the line. Despite Fish Island’s early dominance Acorn managed to force Alex into making two magnificent saves. The chances were a sign that the division 2 side were beginning to get back into the game. The equaliser came from the edge of the penalty box. The Acorn winger shifted the ball onto his right foot and hit and accurate shot into the near post. 1-1.
1-1 at half time.
FIFC came out in the second half focused on regaining the lead. After a good first half it was frustrating to be level at half time. The Scales were the fitter out of the two sides which became more evident as the match wore on. The off the ball efforts restricted the home team from creating any meaningful attempts despite their attacking talent. The best chance of the half came to Jack who weaved his way through 3 players to shoot at the near post. The Acorn goalkeeper produced a great save to keep the match level.
1-1 at full time.
The first period of extra time saw the game become very stretched albeit without many chances for either side. It was clear that fatigue had set in for both teams and it was now a case of who wanted the win more.
1-1 after the first period of extra time.
5 minutes into the second period Acorn FC took the lead. Their striker evaded multiple FIFC challenges on the edge of the box to play an onrushing winger through. The left winger shot across the goal to beat Alex. 2-1. The remaining time saw the Scales send more players forward with each attack and pin their opponents back. It was approaching stoppage time when FIFC won the first out of four consecutive corners. The first three corners were near post in-swingers that the keeper had to the deal with. The final corner saw the FIFC equalise in stoppage time with the last kick of extra time. The corner was cleared to the edge of the box to Aman who hit a half volley that was tipped onto the crossbar. The ball remained in play and was nodded back into the box by Alex. Jacob rose to flick the ball to Dean who volleyed it in. 2-2! 2-2 after extra time.
