Fish Island FC have been eliminated from the Hackney and Leyton Junior Cup.
The Scales were defeated 4-1 on a heavily waterlogged pitch.
The match kicked off 30 minutes late as the assigned pitch was deemed unsafe by the match official following heavy rainfall the night before.
Whilst a replacement pitch was eventually found it was far from ideal as the ball was unplayable in the midfield at times.
FIFC had greater possession in the first half which allowed us to play with a notably high defensive line. Despite this it was the Bow Bbadgers who opened the scoring. A throw in on the left wing put their winger behind the Scales’ defence. The Bbadgers’ winger slotted home cooly. 1-0. It was a soft goal to concede for FIFC.
Our reaction to going a goal down was positive with a number of crosses being delivered and a continued attacking press. Unfortunately for FIFC the next goal was another BBadgers’ one. The goal was a quick counter attack emanating from a Fish Island corner. 2-0. Another disappointing goal to concede leaving us with an uphill battle to make a comeback.
FIFC pulled one back a few minutes later. A good build up on the right wing saw Jack’s cross heading in by Halcyon. 2-1! It was a fantastic finish and a real lifeline.
The half ended with a few more Fish Island chances however none of them really tested the Bbadgers’ keeper.
2-1 at half time.
Half time saw the Scales make all of their substitutions with the intent of making an early impact. A risky strategy however judging from the first half a comeback was definitely possible.
The second half seemed more balanced in terms of possession and attacking. The pitch and conditions played a part in this as we were now playing against the wind and having to build up play in the more heavily saturated half of the pitch. The home team got their third goal from an offside position. Their left winger was received the ball several yards behind the FIFC defence. He was able to finish well in the 1v1 with Alex. 3-1. The referee waved away our protests and the goal stood.
The goal made the comeback look even harder with seemingly nothing going our way. Jacob had a chance cleared off the line and then another denied by the crossbar. The final goal came from the penalty spot. A counterattack on the right wing saw Pierre make a last ditch tackle. The referee awarded the penalty and the Bbadgers’ striker tucked it away. Alex managed to get a hand to it but was unable to keep it out. 4-1.
It has been a disappointing end to the year for Fish Island in terms of results. Let’s see how we can bounce back in 2020! COYS!
