After a 3 match losing streak and slipping down to 7th, FIFC took on their old rivals Wojack Sunday, who were also on a losing streak on the north marshes.
The game started very brightly for Fish Island with some good work from Andrew and Nile in centre however the ball just didn’t fall in the correct place for a shot. Both Nile and Craig pressed the CB from the goal kicks as Wojack looked vulnerable from playing out the back. FIFC then started to have more joy going down the left hand side and had two shouts for a penalty turned down for fouls on Craig.
Despite being the better team Wojak remained a threat on the counter and following a short pass at the back, the Wojack striker blazed just wide.
Fish Island continued to press higher up the pitch and had the lion share of possession but couldn’t seem to make any of this count.
Then right before HT Nile won a free kick on the edge of the box and Jordan’s shot beat the wall and nestled into the bottom corner, although their keeper did get a hand to it. 1-0 at HT was well deserved.
In the second half Fish island were more expressive and this led to the game being a more open affair with lots of chances for both sides.
Sonny had a very good effort to score after making a scintillating run from RM but shot just wide.
However Fish Island doubled their lead after a beautiful solo run by Nile following a wonderfully timed ball by Andrew that split their centre backs was placed into the bottom left corner. 2-0.
Fish island did have to withstand some late pressure, clearing the ball twice off the line from corners and then once from a free kick melee that saw Fish players hurtling their bodies at the ball to keep it out.
Right at the death the Fish should have had two more, the first from Craig who ran the whole pitch but was denied by a great save from their keeper and then super sub,Pepo who with his first touch almost found the bottom corner but was denied by a great last ditch tackle from their CB.
FT 2-0, 3 points and the Fish can go into next week with a bit more confidence of catching the pack at the top, especially how they also have a handful of games in hand.
Created a lot more chances
Kept the first clean sheet
Didn’t let the lead slip after leading at HT
Didn’t concede from a corner
Direct passing was an improvement on previous weeks
Good team spirit and everyone put in a shift
Areas for improvement:
Finishing needs to improve, could have had 5 if we had not have rushed
Need more bodies getting into the box when we attack
Too many stupid fouls
Need to be more a threat from corners
As the game went on and we tired the final ball was poor, keeping it simple and holding onto possession would have helped to shut up shop easier.
Sonny for Mark
David for Barry
Pepo for Andrew
